CLAIM-BPC157-TENDON-REPAIR
“BPC-157 supports tendon repair”
01
Where it started
The earliest study we have checked that this claim traces back to.
The promoting effect of pentadecapeptide BPC 157 on tendon healing involves tendon outgrowth, cell survival, and cell migration.
J Appl Physiol (1985) · 2011 · 5 authors · senior author Pang JH · doi 10.1152/japplphysiol.00945.2010
“BPC 157 promotes the ex vivo outgrowth of tendon fibroblasts from tendon explants, cell survival under stress, and the in vitro migration of tendon fibroblasts, which is likely mediated by the activation of the FAK-paxillin pathway.” — from the study summary, PubMed ID 21030672

What was actually tested
Who or what it was tested on, how, what was measured, and the exact words the study used.
- Tested on
- Ratthe study summary says the cells came from rat tissue; the title does not say
- Test setup
- Tendon explant culture and cultured tendon fibroblasts derived from rat Achilles tendon (ex vivo / in vitro)
- What was measured
- Fibroblast outgrowth from explants; cell survival under H2O2 stress; transwell migration; FAK/paxillin phosphorylation
- The study’s own words
- “BPC 157 promotes the ex vivo outgrowth of tendon fibroblasts from tendon explants, cell survival under stress, and the in vitro migration of tendon fibroblasts, which is likely mediated by the activation of the FAK-paxillin pathway.”
- Abstract, PMID 21030672

How the story spread
From the study, to the retelling, to the people online. Every line says how the two ends are connected. Dashed lines are not confirmed or not connected.

How the wording changed
Watch a careful study result turn into a bold post. That is not always lying. But each step is tagged so you can see exactly what changed.
What the study said
BPC 157 promotes the ex vivo outgrowth of tendon fibroblasts from tendon explants, cell survival under stress, and the in vitro migration of tendon fibroblasts, which is likely mediated by the activation of the FAK-paxillin pathway.

Studies that push back
Results that found nothing, results that disagree, and criticism of how a study was run.
No study we have checked pushes back on this yet
One study only partly backs it (slightly better scores, but not by enough to count). It is listed above under studies that back it, in its own words. Not finding a study is not the same as proving there is none.

What people say
People online describe what they felt. That is worth reading, but it does not prove the product caused it.

The short version
Our plain-English reading. Every sentence comes from a study listed above, or says clearly what we do not have.
- 1The earliest study we have checked used tendon cells taken from rat Achilles tendon and grown in a dish. It measured how the cells grew, survived stress and moved. It did not test repair of an injured tendon in a living animal.
- 2One rat study we checked found tissue scores for BPC-157 that were a little lower than the control group, but not by enough to count as a real difference. That partly backs the claim. It does not disprove it.
- 3Three review papers talk about this topic but did not run their own test of the claim.
- 4We have not found a proper human trial of this result. That means we have not found one, not that one does not exist.
- 5We are not collecting real-world reports yet, so there is nothing from people online to show here.
